Three Tomorrows of Postnormal Times: A Workshop Exploring Methods of Futures Studies

Sulaymaniyah Mosque

4th IIIT/CPPFS Istanbul Workshop

22-24 April, Istanbul

Workshop Day 1

The Forth Futures Workshop in Istanbul focussed this year on introducing the participants to Futures Studies and Postnormal Times in order to identify trends and emerging issues, as well as develop scenarios for higher education in Turkey. Held at the Alliance of Civilisations Institute, Ibn Haldun University, in the Sulaymaniyah Mosque Complex, participants from various backgrounds, all with a stake in the future of Turkish Higher Education were presented with a variety of Futures Studies methods leading up to the Three Tomorrows of Postnormal Times theory and motivated to think beyond the traditional forward-looking scope of strategic planning. Through the examination of trends and emerging issues in Turkey that effect Higher Education, the participants discovered variables that had a profound impact on the complexity, chaos, and contradictions of postnormal times. These elements were then synthesised into scenarios that challenged the extension of the present and what remains familiar in our future planning. The results uncovered a previously unthought potential within the futures of Higher Education in Turkey. Progressing through each of the three tomorrows, participants explored the concepts of power and agency involved in forging the preferred futures for their community. This workshop also served as an important vehicle for developing a dedicated network of futures thinkers in Istanbul.
